What I'll need from you:

A DNS name where your mailer is listening, this will be added to the zone file as a CNAME entry
A Packet/Session/Tic/AreaFix password

What I'll provide you:

A BBS FTN node address (like 855:1/999@bbsdev)

How to set up a Synchronet system to connect

In SCFG, add your node address to Networks → FidoNet EchoMail and NetMail → System Addresses as a new AKA
Be sure File Attachments are allowed
If binkd is being used:
- Add the lines to binkd.conf to set the zone, enable the DNS zone, and add a link:

In ctrl/sbbsecho.ini, add the bbsdev domain:

How to configure The Clans for InterBBS play

What I'll need from you:

A name for your BBS
A name for the village that represents your BBS
A short (1-20 line) blurb about why your BBS is awesome and all Clans should travel there and leave their crappy BBS/Village behind, along with how to connect (hostname, protocol, etc). Clans-style pipe codes are allowed.

A | followed by two digits is a pipe code
00-15 are forground colors in the CGA palette
16-31 are background colors.

What I'll provide you:

A BBS ID

Setting up The Clans

First, install The Clans (TBD)
- For Linux, from the Synchronet source repo:
  - cd /sbbsrepo/src/doors/clans-src
  - gmake install INSTALLDIR=/sbbs/xtrn/clans
Run the config utility, set everything up
- InterBBS - Yes
- BBSID - The ID I provided you
- NetmailDir - should be from SCFG → Networks → FidoNet EchoMail and NetMail → NetMail Directory
- InboundDir - Should match SecureInbound key from ctrl/sbbsecho.ini
- InboundDir - (Alternate) should match Inbound key from ctrl/sbbsecho.ini
- MailerType - Binkey
- OutputSemaphore - /path/to/sbbs/data/fidoout.now
Copy the current world.ndx file into your Clans directory
Now run the reset utility, and select "Join a league"

None of the configurable values here matter in a league as far as I know, just hit the Join a League option.

Now set it up in scfg... you'll need three external program entries:

First is in External Programs → Online Programs (Doors) → <Some Section> → The Clans.

Yes, be sure to use REAL NAMES in the dropfile, the real name is how you can travel to different BBSs. Also, ensure the drop file is configured for LOWER CASE.

The next two are timed events in External Programs → Timed Events, the first of course is maintenance. Yes, it's exclusive, so feel free to move it around, it will only do something if nobody has entered the door today. The reason it needs to be exclusive is so it can delete the online.flg file in the case of crashes so players can get into the door again.

Set up your tosser to create a .msg file in your netmail directory, and touch the data/clansibbs.now semaphore file when a packet comes in
- If SBBSEcho version 3.31 or higher is being used:
  - Add a robot section in ctrl/sbbsecho.ini:

Run clans /i to send out your first batch of recons. This should generate and send a netmail message to every BBS in the league

Troubleshooting The Clans

Basic NetMail process:

After you run clans /i, cl??????.BD? files are created in the clans/outbound directory and matching #.msg files are created in the configured netmail directory
Then, data/fidoout.now is touched, and sbbsecho runs. This should delete the *.msg files in the netmail directory and create 00010001.dut files in the mail outbound directory (oubound.bbsdev.375).
- If the *.msg files stay put, check the data/sbbsecho.log file. It should have line similar to "Packing NetMail (1.msg) from The Clans League BD (885:1/999) to The Clans League BD (885:1/1), attr: 0x0191 (PRIVATE, FILE, KILLSENT, LOCAL), subject: ^/path/to/clans/outbound/cl999001.BDa" followed by "Touching outgoing semfile: ../data/binkout.now" in the same session
- Running sbbsecho -dmpectin will do just the part you need, and there is additional log information in the output
- Pay close attention to the paths, In Synchronet, relative paths are relative to the ctrl directory
sbbsecho touches a semaphore (data/binkout.now) to alert the mailer
The mailer then delivers these and deletes the files from clans/outbound and the mailer outbound
Incoming packets create cl??????.BD? files in one of the two inbound directories and a *.msg in the netmail directory
BinkIT touches data/clansibbs.now
When clans /i is ran, the cl*.BD? files and the *.msg files are deleted
When files are sitting somewhere, that means there's something wrong with that step.

Sending a packet:

You can send a "recon" (ie: ping) packet to test netmail at any time.
